Biography:
In one of the most terrifying storms of the year, at the darkest hour of night, a little bundle of joy was delivered in a little town in Northern Japan. A scowling mother looked down at her giggling baby girl and named her Kioko Amaya, which means 'night rain'. They were a more modern Japanese family and had decided that they wanted her to have a middle name. Kioko was the youngest child in a family of five. Her father wasn't home much, but when he was, everyone was much happier. Well, all except for Kio.
She was viewed as the mistake of the family. No one wanted her. It wasn't because she didn't have talent. It was because she was a girl, and the family was down on money. Her parents would have much rather have been buying food for another son, who could carry on the Shatoko name, then a girl. Every day, she was overworked. When she reached age three, they sent her off to gymnastics in the hopes that they would have an Olympic champion. After gymnastics, she had choral lessons with a voice instructor. By age five, she was more mature than anyone in her grad. She could read, write, add, subtract, and even multiply and divide, but apart from that, she seemed average.
It seemed that since the moment she was born, misfortune would strike the poor girl, and it was during school in the third grade that things started getting weird. During recess, all the kids were playing dodge ball, a game that Kio would much rather have done without. She could dodge anything that came her way, but throwing was almost impossible. That day, every one was teasing her so much that she was almost in tears, and that's when it happened. Kio had the rubber ball, had pulled her arm back, and then let it fly. Like always, it soared for about ten feet, then began to plummet toward the ground.
Kio had her fingers crossed and was willing it to keep going, just a little longer. To her's and everyone else's surprise, the red ball made a sharp veer in the air, and slammed right into the face of one of the bullies. Everyone stared at her. Every last kid. They hadn't known what had happened, but they knew that Kio was different. That was all it took to ruin her life. No one would speak to her anymore, unless they were going to flood her with questions. "How did you do that?""That was so weird! You're a freak!" The only thing that kept her going was gymnastics and choir. They took all her free time, but at least they didn't allow any of those horrible children to tease her.
Until she had turned twelve, she was treated like a nobody by her own family, but at age thirteen, so many crazy things had happened around her, that her father felt it was best to tell her what he was. A wizard. At first, Kio had called him a liar, but that didn't last long. He'd cast a levitation spell on her and silenced anymore names that she wanted to throw at him. That was also when she finally became aware that she had an older brother, Mokoto, who was also a wizard. The reason she'd never seen him was because he was at some school of magic.
A few weeks later, during summer break, Mokoto came home. He greeted her with the warmest hug she'd had in her life, and they were instantly best friends. It was like they'd known each other their entire lives. Finally, someone loved her for who she was, not her talent in gymnastics or her pretty voice. When he left for school, it was devastating, but now, here she is. At the very same school. Maybe things will go her way, but... They never have before.

Rain whispered as it slid down the cracked window and fell from the tiny balcony rails like tears. The soft dripping was barely audible above the thunder of a crashing storm from above, but even a storm couldn't muffle the cacophonous booming coming from the House lounge. There were so many voices, all of them loud. All of them laughing. Kio wanted to be down there with them, but she just couldn't bring herself to do it. This was her first day and she didn't know anyone. Most of them were friendly, but they didn't say more than 'hello'.
With her face cradled between her palms, Kioko gazed through the rain-streaked glass with deep brown eyes. How she longed for something more than this miserable existence. She was always hiding, trapped in this prison and forced to watch the world through one small, apartment window. This room, past of the dorm, was verging on claustrophobic and she felt like she couldn't even stretch her arms out. All she wanted was to be free, but if she left the safety of these smothering walls, what would be waiting for her?
Gingerly, Maya traced a pale scar that snaked its way around her arm, ending in a graceful spiral at the base of her wrist. Painful memories flooded her mind, haunting her. There was the flash of men, all rough, all with the same cruel grin. They were armed with knives and guns. Agonized screams filled the still air. her screams. Those men had tortured her because her family refused to pay ransom. Too proud to contact the authorities and too stingy too relinquish any of their hard-earned cash, her parents had let her suffer. That was three years ago. Those were the absolute worst years of her life.
Sighing, Kio slowly stood from her sagging couch, and walked to the door of her apartment. She'd took a deep breath, reached for the knob and then let her hand fall. Rubbing her hands over her face, the girl tugged on a thin black jacket and this time, gripped the knob. Pulling it open, the nineteen year old stepped out her apartment. She'd been there for a three days now. Venturing outside was frightening every time, but it was time for a change. She was tired of hiding. Tired of being locked up. From now on, things would be different. She was going to excel at magic, no matter what the costs to those around her.
