Whitestone School of Magic is the only magical school in the United States, and like all others of its kind is highly protected from unwanted intrusion, particularly by curious Muggles. It was founded by a wizard named Tristan White who wanted to create a secure and trustworthy place for the wizards and witches of America to be properly taught to handle their abilities and maximize their potential. The school is a fairly new establishment, only having been created about fifty years ago.
As a boarding school, the students live on campus in dorm rooms that are separate from the main building. Each of the six dorm rooms has a Housemaster or Housemistress that is in charge of his or her students. Students who attend Whitestone are required to board at the school, regardless of their home's proximity, to prevent unauthorized travel to and from the school.
The grounds at Whitestone are wide-open, and green year-round due to a spell cast by Dean Tristan White several years after its opening. The weather also stays pleasant year round, the temperature hovering between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, rain does not fall, nor does it snow. The grounds are kept up by magical means and rain is simply not necessary.
The Entryway is off to the side of the school and is where visitors and students arrive. There are several off-site portals that lead to Whitestone by permanent portkey, and all are carefully monitored by the Magical Law Enforcement Agency (MLEA). Once a person arrives in the Entryway, they are double checked by the school's own highly trained security. Each students belongings are scanned for prohibited items, including unauthorized reading material (such as spellbooks on the dark arts, invisibility cloaks, etc) on arrival.
